The United States Mint has begun production of fractional weight 2010 American Gold Eagle bullion coins. Until now, the US Mint has only produced and sold the one ounce version of the coin.
The fractional weight gold bullion coins will come in one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce sizes. Each coin contains its stated weight in 22 karat (91.67%) gold.
These coins represent an important aspect of the gold bullion program, as they help to accommodate different investment levels. In the year 1999, when US Mint gold bullion sales peaked, the top selling coin was the one-tenth ounce version. (Back then it was around $40.) There were an astounding 5,097,000 of the one-tenth ounce coins sold that year, compared to 1,511,000 of the one ounce coins.
Last year, the US Mint did not offer the fractional Gold Eagles until December 3, 2009. The available inventory sold out quickly with final recorded sales of 110,000 one-half ounce coins, 110,000 one-quarter ounce coins, and 270,000 one-tenth ounce coins.
The sales start date for the fractional 2010 Gold Eagles is still unknown.
