July 2010 American Gold Eagle Sales

Aug 5, 2010

2010 Gold EagleFor the month ending July 31, 2010, the United States Mint recorded sales of 152,000 ounces of gold through their American Gold Eagle bullion coin offering. This is up slightly from the prior month when 151,500 ounces were sold, and far above the year ago period when sales were 86,000 ounces.

The United States Mint offered the 2010 Gold Eagles across the full range of options, including one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one tenth ounce sizes. By far, the biggest seller was the one ounce coin.

The breakdown of sales was 147,500 of the one ounce coins, 2,000 each for the one-half and one quarter ounce coins, and 30,000 of the one-tenth ounce coins. Compared to the prior month, fractional weight coins showed a big decline. These lower weight coins were offered last month, representing the first availability in about six months. Pent up demand likely fueled initial sales, which receeded back to lower levels this month.

Collector versions of the Gold Eagle have still not been offered by the United States Mint, although prospects seem favorable for the issuance of Proof 2010 Gold Eagles later this year.
