The first month of Gold Eagle bullion sales have been completed for 2010. This month included sales of the new 2010-dated coins beginning on January 19, 2010 and sales of 2009-dated coins before and after this date. The opening month of sales represents a step down in the heavy demand for gold bullion coins experienced in recent months.
In total, the United States Mint recorded sales of 85,000 American Gold Eagle bullion coins. This included sales of only the one ounce versions of the coins. The fractional versions have not been offered yet.
This amount compares to sales of 92,000 ounces in the year ago period. More notably, the amount is less than half the number of ounces sold in the prior month. In December 2009, the US Mint had sold a total of 231,500 ounces. Sales were elevated as this was the first time that fractional Gold Eagle coins had been offered in more than a year.
During January 2010, the highest price of gold was $1,153.00 per ounce reached on January 11, 2010. The lowest price was $1,078.50 reached on January 31, 2010.
