American Gold Eagle bullion coins will be available a bit later than usual this year. The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the one ounce coins from authorized purchasers on January 19, 2010.
Traditionally, the US Mint would begin production of bullion coins bearing the following year’s date in late November or early December. Orders for the coins could be placed in late December for delivery in early January. This has allowed bullion dealers to get a jump on the demand for the new year’s coins. Some have said that the delayed release combined with the ongoing allocation program may caused at least a temporary shortage for 2010 Gold Eagles until the US Mint can catch up with the demand.
The status of possible fractional weight Gold Eagles remains unknown. Each year the Mint has produced gold coins with bullion weights of 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/2 ounce. Last year, these offerings were delayed and only available for a few days in December.
The status of collectible versions of the American Gold Eagle is also uncertain. For 2009, the collectible proof and uncirculated versions were canceled. This is something that has not happened since the series began in 1986.
